Smart-TV surveillance archive

Every version of every document a smart TV makes you accept.

Dated, hashed, downloadable. Television makers describe what their sets watch in careful euphemism on the consumer page and in plain language on the ad-sales page. Both are kept here, so that when either quietly changes, the sentence it used to say is still on record.

The cost of consent

How much text each company asks you to accept before its television works: terms, privacy policies, ACR and viewing-data notices, taken from the latest captured version of every document in its Agreements file. The same text served at several addresses is counted once. Each dial's sweep is that text read aloud at 200 words a minute: one full turn is the same number of hours on every dial, so the rings compare directly, and the sweep is split by document, largest first.

Words you must accept, by company

14 companies with at least one captured agreement · latest version of each document

counted, not asserted
one document's words, clockwise from the top, largest first a rim tick every quarter hour read aloud; one full turn is 8.3 h

Each dial is a floor, not a ceiling. n/m docs is how many of a company's watched agreement documents have been captured and counted; where m exceeds n, the remainder has not yet returned a readable page. A company absent from this chart has no captured agreement at all. Method: how the figures are computed.

02

Policy length over time

The word count of an agreement at every dated version the archive holds. Shown here: the 8 documents that grew most, of the 30 with at least 2 years of history, drawn where the archive holds 8 or more readable versions. Every point is a version you can open; hollow markers were recovered from the Internet Archive and are dated to archive.org's capture.

a version we captured a version recovered from archive.org a stratum: the length a version reached, held until a later version fell below it

The multiplier is the current length divided by the baseline length. Each is the median of three versions (the last three and the first three), so a single bad snapshot, an error page or a cookie wall, cannot set either figure; the points themselves are plotted as counted. Word counts are of the extracted text split on whitespace, the same count used in the chart above, and every version is downloadable from its document page. Between two versions the line holds the last length we saw; the document may have changed unobserved in between, which is why the steps are square rather than sloped.

When a watched phrase first appeared in a company's agreements, and when it was last seen there. Each trace lights at the earliest dated capture containing the phrase and holds while it stays. A trace that falls and runs low is a phrase absent from every later capture of that company's agreements; one that ends with a cap is still there in the latest readable capture.

First and last appearance of watched phrases, by company

22 company–phrase pairs · 12 companies · 5 phrases · agreement documents only

lit: the phrase is in the company's agreements cap: still there in the latest readable capture low, solid: absent from every later capture low, dotted: before the first capture containing it - no evidence either way

Matching is a case-insensitive search of the extracted text for the phrase itself. A company missing from a row never used that phrase in any captured agreement; a company missing from every row has no captured agreement. The same documents are counted in the cost-of-consent figure above.
